In this chapter, we present a framework for topology control (TC) as a cooperation mechanism in ad hoc networks and then describe several TC approaches within this framework.We present a classification of the current TCmechanisms, discuss the functionality and the key principles of the individual existing protocols, and provide a qualitative comparison of their characteristics according to several distinct features and performance parameters. Throughout our discussion special emphasis is placed on themain objectives of TC, namely reducing interference and energy consumption, whilemaintaining connectivity and adapting quickly to the dynamic changes of the ad hoc networking environment. The overall evaluation of the relative performances makes it apparent that no single mechanism can strike an absolute balance among all requirements, and application-specific considerations are needed for choosing an appropriate solution. © 2009 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
