abstract = {e23271 Background: CLIMEDIN was a randomized controlled trial of digital support for patients with advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. Patients received either general adverse event (AE) information (control arm), or personalized support depending on their reported AEs (intervention arm). Given the statistically significant difference found between the AEs reported digitally by patients and those captured directly by clinicians, this post-hoc analysis aims to identify patterns of likely co-occurrence of AEs. Methods: Between March 2022 and December 2024, 188 patients submitted 7046 reports among 22 preselected AEs, captured in the CareAcross platform database. For this analysis these reports were de-identified and structured based on the specific AEs they contained. Association rule mining (apriori algorithm with support thresholds) was used to calculate the conditional probability of an AE subset (“Associated AEs”) being reported given that another subset (“Index AEs”) was reported concurrently. Results: The analysis resulted in 7846 pairs of Associated & Index AE subsets, with up to 7 AEs per subset. The conditional probability of co-occurrence (“Confidence”) ranged from 2.5% to 100%.To make the patterns clinically meaningful and practical, analyses were restricted to subsets of 1-2 AEs, resulting in 1870 combinations. Keeping the pairs with probability > = 80% resulted in 110 records (37 of which with > = 90% probability). The majority (78/110 or 71%) of Associated AEs included Fatigue.Among the AEs that are not immediately available upon clinical examination: Anorexia was correlated with combinations containing dyspnea (with any of rash, constipation, dysphagia, dysgeusia, diarrhea) as well as dysphagia & weight loss. Dysgeusia was correlated with combinations containing anorexia (with any of pruritus, diarrhea), diarrhea (with any of cough, anorexia, dry skin), stomatitis (with any of dry skin, cough) and more. The full list of associations is available upon request. The Table contains the most frequently occurring pairs of 1 or 2 AEs that do not include Fatigue. Conclusions: Analysis of Patient-Reported Outcomes can provide relevant Real World Evidence to support clinicians in completing the view of their patients’ journeys. This can be particularly applicable when information is missing, or AEs cannot be readily evaluated clinically.Data Science and Artificial Intelligence can further help derive actionable insights for clinical care and research. abstract = {Background: HER2-low breast cancers are a mixture of luminal and triple negative tumors. Precise molecular characterization can help refine treatment strategies with novel antibody-drug conjugates and improve outcomes in this patient subgroup. Methods: We used central ER/PgR (HR) and HER2/ERBB2 IHC/FISH assessment to define HER2-low (IHC 1+ or 2+/FISH non-amplified), HER2-zero (IHC 0) and Luminal A/ Luminal B/ TNBC subtypes across 7 prospective adjuvant studies in which eBC patients were treated with dose dense sequential chemotherapy. Retrospective analysis of clinico-pathological data and IHC markers from tissue microarray cores was performed on N=2,751 cases, whereas DNA next generation sequencing (NGS) data were available in a subset of N=1,120 tumors. Heterogeneity was investigated by comparing HER2-low concordant (HER2-low_c) cases, when all cores were scored consistently as HER2-low (>0) and HER2-low discordant (HER2-low_d) cases, when at least one core was scored “0”. Results: First, HER2-low tumors were more likely to be HR + (p<0.001). Second, within HR + disease only, the proportion of Luminal B was higher in HER2-low (51%) than HER2-zero (41.6%), whereas Luminal A showed the opposite pattern (p< 0.001); PIK3CA mutations on the other hand were more common in HER2-zero (33.6% vs. 24.7%},

abstract = {BACKGROUND: We report for the first time the molecular landscape and outcome associations from the prospective CLIMEDIN trial in Greece. METHODS: Two hundred patients with newly diagnosed advanced NSCLC (March 2022-October 2023) were enrolled and randomized to standard-of-care education versus additional automated, adverse-event-targeted digital interventions. Within this study baseline testing (EGFR, ALK, PD-L1) was performed in all; 165 tumors underwent comprehensive NGS (Oncomine Comprehensive Assay v3). Primary endpoint was improvement in AEs/QoL; secondary endpoints included ORR, PFS and OS. Associations between genomic alterations and outcomes were explored. RESULTS: Median age was 68 years; 75% male; 52% current smokers; adenocarcinoma 68.5%. Most received chemo-immunotherapy (66%). At data cut-off (December 2025; reverse-Kaplan-Meier median follow-up 36.3 months), median PFS was 9.6 months and median OS was 15.2 months. Across 200 tumors, 495 pathogenic variants (PVs) were identified in 83 genes. Exploratory outcome analyses showed longer OS in EGFR-mutant disease (preserved under parsimonious multivariable adjustment) and a formal KRAS × smoking interaction for OS (interaction P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort, the molecular profile mirrors other Caucasian series, with clinically relevant enrichment patterns for EGFR and KRAS. ECOG performance status and first line treatment were the dominant prognostic factors in this cohort. A novel KRAS and smoking interaction for overall survival warrants prospective validation.},

abstract = {Background: Robust clinico-genomic predictors of survival in dnMBC remain ill defined. We employed next generation sequencing (NGS) to explore the mutational spectrum of a Greek dnMBC cohort alongside key clinicopathological factors and evaluated their prognostic impact for overall survival (OS). Patients and Methods: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissue blocks were collected from the HeCOG Biobank for 106 patients with dnMBC alongside peripheral blood samples for 91 cases. NGS was performed on Ion Torrent platforms with AmpliSeq DNA panels targeting genes recurrently altered in BC. Variants classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic (PVs) according to Clinvar and ACMG/AMP criteria were then processed for analysis. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were applied to assess prognostic relevance of both genomic and clinicopathological variables. Results: The total study population consisted of 106 women with a median age of 63 years (31-86); 67 patients (64%) were postmenopausal Overall, 62.5% presented with a PS of 0 and 74% with NST histology. Regarding tumor profiling, 82% were hormone receptor (HR) positive, 28.8% HER2+, 50% grade 3. Family history of cancer was positive in 17.3% of patients. Notably, 42% of patients underwent some type of breast surgery. First-line treatment included a combination of aromatase inhibitor (AI) and CDK4/6 inhibitor in 36 (34%) patients, chemotherapy (CT) alone in 27 (23.6%), combination of CT and other targeted agents in 30 (28.3%), hormonal therapy only in 7 (6.6%), while for 6 patients (5.6%) treatment data were missing. Moreover, 11 patients (10.3%) were diagnosed with locoregional (LR) disease only, 45 (42.5%) with distant and 42 (39%) with LR and distant metastases. Regarding IHC subtypes tested locally, 70 patients (66%) were classified as Luminal A/B, 31 (29.2%) HER2+ and 5 (4.7%) as TNBC. At least one PV was present in 69 of 106 tumors (65.1 %), with most carrying PVs in PIK3CA (40 cases; 37.7 %) and TP53 (29 cases; 27.4 %). Recurrent, albeit less frequent, PVs were also observed in ERBB2, GATA3, PTEN, CDH1 and AKT1 (each present in ≥ 2 tumors). Meanwhile, germline sequencing revealed single PVs in two patients, one in TP53 and the other in PTEN. In univariate analyses, none of the standard clinicopathological parameters (age, menopausal status, performance status, histology, T-stage, grade, ER/HER2 status) or individual PVs reached statistical significance for OS. No significant difference was found between Luminal and HER2+ subgroups. Conclusion: The mutational landscape of our Greek dnMBC series reveals a high prevalence of actionable PIK3CA, TP53 and ERBB2 alterations. These findings emphasize further the biological heterogeneity of dnMBC disease and the need for the identification of novel integrative biomarkers beyond standard clinico-genomic parameters to improve prognosis and guide therapeutic decisions. abstract = {Purpose As online review platforms such as TripAdvisor increasingly share visitor experiences and shape institutional reputations, the influence of emotion in complaint reviews on guiding service recovery strategies remains inadequately understood. This study aims to explore the emotional dynamics between negative tourist reviews and museum responses. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on emotion regulation theory, we analyzed 615 negative reviews and their corresponding institutional responses from 32 internationally recognized museums using theory-informed content analysis and emotion mining based on machine learning. Findings Complaint emotions are categorized in terms of the intensity of feelings (e.g. fear, confusion, disappointment), and museum responses are grouped according to Gross’s emotion regulation strategy framework. The findings indicate that the emotions expressed in complaints are closely tied to the emotion regulation strategies used by museums in their responses (e.g. museums used cognitive change in response to feelings of sadness). Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on cultural tourism by illustrating not only the potential to discover fine-grained emotions in visitors’ complaints and group them into emotion profiles in a continuum of emotional negativity but also their relationship with emotion regulation strategies expressed in the museum’s responses. The results identify both the patterns of emotional fit between complaints and responses and the communicative effort of these strategies, thereby demonstrating the application of emotion regulation theory to explain digital service recovery in the context of cultural tourism.},

abstract = {PURPOSE This trial aims to investigate the effectiveness of online digital intervention in patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in terms of adverse events (AEs) and quality of life (QoL). METHODS This randomized trial recruited 200 patients with advanced NSCLC (March 2022-October 2023). All patients received standard-of-care precise treatment, predominantly immunochemotherapy. The study was designed to assess AEs and QoL improvement. Through the CareAcross online platform, all patients received information about their disease and treatment and reported any of the 22 predefined AEs at any time. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 in the intervention (A) and control (B) arm; patients in arm A automatically received, additionally, evidence-based guidance for the reported AEs. EuroQol 5-dimension 5-level responses were collected at baseline and at each treatment cycle. Resulting scores were compared between baseline and after the sixth cycle. In addition, patient case–level hospitalization data were collected and costs were estimated based on reimbursed costs as defined by the Ministry of Health, enabling a post hoc analysis. RESULTS Clinical characteristics were well-balanced. More AEs were reported by patients online versus to their clinicians ( P < .01). Among the 22 AEs, 17 improved more in arm A, with the improvement in rash and stomatitis being statistically significant. In QoL, there was no improvement in any of the five EuroQol 5-Dimension dimensions. Digital intervention was cost-saving with lower mean costs for hospitalization ( P < .001). Overall response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival were not statistically different between the two arms, ensuring comparable clinical outcome. CONCLUSION Digital oncology tends to improve selected AEs and is cost saving. Patients report, digitally, more informative AEs. Digital oncology can be a complementary tool to the oncology team and warrants further exploration.},

abstract = {Background Approved treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients pretreated with two lines of therapy are of limited efficacy. Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) re-challenge might represent an option in RAS wild-type tumours. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anti-EGFR re-challenge strategies (panitumumab/chemotherapy). Materials and methods RAS wild-type metastatic CRC patients following first-line chemotherapy + anti-EGFR agent and second-line chemotherapy ± anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agent were eligible. Panitumumab with irinotecan or oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy was used. The primary objective was response rate (RR). Secondary objectives were safety, progression-free survival and overall survival. Next-generation sequencing-based genotyping in archived tissue and plasma was carried out to identify prognostic factors. Results The study closed prematurely, due to poor accrual, with 23 patients included. Most patients had primary tumours in the left colon/rectum, and the liver was the most common metastatic site. Treatment modifications were required in 74% of patients due to side-effects primarily, neutropenia and acneiform rash. One patient died from hepatic failure. The objective RR in the intention-to-treat population was 13%, and the disease control rate (DCR) was 52%. Forty-eight percent of patients tested via liquid biopsy had RAS mutations before re-challenge with panitumumab despite a median interval from previous anti-EGFR therapy of 12 months. Control of disease did not correlate with the results of liquid biopsy. RR and DCR in patients without RAS mutations in liquid biopsies were 18.2% and 54.5%, respectively. Conclusion Panitumumab/chemotherapy as an anti-EGFR re-challenge strategy had modest activity in our patient cohort.},

abstract = {BACKGROUND: Extensive stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) has poor prognosis, and first-line chemo-immunotherapy is now the standard-of-care. We hypothesized that intercalated immunotherapy administration in-between chemotherapy cycles, at maximal neoantigen release, might enhance immune response and efficacy. METHODS: PAVE is a multicenter phase II study. Patients with untreated ES-SCLC received standard platinum-etoposide every three weeks for 4-6 cycles. Avelumab 10mg/kg was administered every two weeks from cycle 3 until chemotherapy completion, and as maintenance thereafter. The primary endpoint was one-year PFS. Genotyping of FFPE tumors via targeted NGS, assessment of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and analysis of CD8 and PD-L1, was performed. RESULTS: Between September 2018-September 2020, 55 pts, median age 65.9 years, 67.3 % male, were enrolled. With median follow-up of 10.3 months, 1-year PFS was 12.7 %, median PFS 5.8 months, 1-year OS 38.2 %, median OS 10.3 months. ORR was 69.1 % (CR 5.5 %, PR 63.6 %), median DoR 5.6 months. AEs grade 3-4 occurred in 56 % of patients. QoL, global health status and disease-related symptoms were significantly improved from baseline. The presence of TILs/CD8 in tumour was not significantly associated with survival. All but one tumor carried genetic alterations, with TP53 (89.5 %), RB1 (57.9 %), NOTCH (31.6 %) and MYC (23.7 %) being the most frequently mutated genes. Liver metastases, RB1 or TP53/RB1 co-mutations, no PCI and age > 65 years were negative PFS/ OS prognosticators. There were 10 Long Term Survivors (LTS) identified, the majority < 65 years old and most with ≤ 3 metastatic sites (50 %). Median OS of the LTS was 34.2 months and median PFS 19.9 months. CONCLUSIONS: Intercalated avelumab administration with chemotherapy did not meet the primary endpoint of 1-year PFS. However, our results suggest that this approach demonstrates clinically relevant PFS, DoR, and improved QoL, with overall outcomes similar to those seen with standard frontline chemotherapy in historical controls.},

abstract = {1515 Background: This trial aims to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of online digital intervention to NSCLC patients in terms of adverse events (AEs), quality of life (QoL), cost, and the interrelation with clinical and molecular characteristics. Methods: This prospective randomized trial recruited 200 advanced NSCLC patients (3/22-10/23). Final analysis was undertaken in 12/24. All had NGS tissue analysis for 161 genes, and received standard treatment (predominantly immuno-chemotherapy). Through the CareAcross online platform, they received information about their disease and treatment, and periodically reported any of the 22 preplanned AEs. Patients were randomized 1:1 in the Intervention (A) and Control (B) arm; patients in arm A received digitally, additionally, evidence-based guidance for the reported AEs. The study was designed to assess AE improvement (measured per patient as reduction of AEs reported at last contact, compared to those previously reported) and QoL. EQ5D-5L scores were collected. Patient-case level hospitalization data were collected and costs were estimated based on reimbursed cost as defined by the Ministry of Health. Results were correlated with patients’ clinical and molecular characteristics. Results: Clinical and molecular characteristics will be presented during ASCO Congress. Comparing arms A vs B: ORR: 42.1% vs 41.7%; Median PFS: 11m (8.0-15) vs 10m (7.0-13), 1-year PFS: 43% (31%-54%) vs 42% (31%-53%) (p = 0.4). Median OS: 15m (12-20) vs 16m (12-21), 1-year OS: 59% (48%-68%) for both arms (p = 0.9). PFS and OS were improved for those with best responses (p < 0.001). Patients with EGFR mutations had better OS (p = 0.05). The most common AEs reported in both arms were fatigue, cough, anorexia, nausea. More AEs were reported online vs to clinicians (89% vs 68% of patients; p < 0.01). Baseline EQ5D-5L was similar for both arms; when compared with data at best response, Anxiety/Depression showed the biggest difference in improvement for arm A vs B. Among the 22 ΑEs, 17 improved more in arm A, 1 improved equally, and 4 improved more in Arm B. The comparative improvements of rash and stomatitis in arm A vs B were statistically significant (p = 0.0073 & p = 0.0447). The mean hospitalization cost (arm A vs B, in Euros) was 455.4 (95%CI: 91.9-941.5) vs 779.5 (346.6-1328.5) (p < 0.001); the mean diagnostics cost was 20.3 (0.5-50.8) vs 73.3 (1.3-186.1) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Digital oncology is feasible, cost-effective by reducing hospitalizations and tends to improve QoL (especially anxiety and depression) and most AEs of NSCLC patients regardless of clinical and molecular status. Patients report, digitally, more informative AEs for clinical and research analysis. Through the digital transformation of healthcare, digital oncology can be a complementary tool to the Oncology team and warrants further exploration. Clinical trial information: NCT05372081 .},

abstract = {In technology-focused crowdfunding, campaign outcomes are connected to the strength and delivery of a persuasive message. Owing to the technical complexity of these projects, persuasive elements can be found in features scattered across the project's textual description and video pitch. To date, existing research has systematically examined the influence of textual attributes, but the impact of auricular attributes and their joint persuasive effect is not yet clearly understood. To investigate these gaps, our study uses text and audio features extracted from a dataset of 3589 reward-based technology crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter. The results indicate that both text (brevity, readability, and sentiment) and audio (tone neutrality, audio contour, frequency, and harmonics) features of a campaign's message, positively influence crowdfunding outcomes. This influence is more pronounced when they are considered in conjunction. These results provide new theoretical insights for assessing persuasive message properties in a technology crowdfunding context. For entrepreneurs, the strength and delivery of the story put forward in technology crowdfunding are more noticeable when the joint effects of text and audio are considered.},

For all patients, responses were: CR: 2%, PR: 35.5%, SD: 35%, PD: 10.5%. Median PFS was 7.0 months (95%CI: 5-8), 1-year 18% (38%-55%). Median OS: 12 months (11-14), 1-year 47% (38%-55%). No difference was found between the two arms in any of the above, nor in OS in relation to clinical and molecular characteristics. The most common AEs that patients reported were fatigue, cough, anorexia, nausea. More patients submitted AE reports online than their clinicians (89% vs 68% of patients, p<0.01); more AEs were reported per submission, compared to their clinicians. Patients in arm Α reported marginally higher improvement compared to B (77.2% vs 75.7%); 15 of 22 AEs were associated with higher (14) or same (1) improvement in arm A vs B (not statistically significant); of the most common: fatigue (61.3% vs 48.6%), anorexia (86.5% vs 70.2%; p<0.05) and nausea (93.0% vs 87.2%). Baseline EQ5D was similar in both arms; comparing post-treatment (6th cycle) results shows higher improvement in all 5 dimensions in arm A vs B, especially in Anxiety/Depression (final values: 1.9 vs 2.2). The mean AE-related costs in Euros in arm A vs B were: hospitalization: 455.4 (95%CI: 91.9-941.5) vs 779.5 (346.6-1328.5) (p<0.001); diagnostics: 20.3 (0.5-50.8) vs 73.3 (1.3-186.1) (p<0.001). abstract = {In this paper we introduce a method for Web page-ranking, based on computational geometry to evaluate and test by examples, order relationships among web pages belonging to different knowledge domains. The goal is, through an organising procedure, to learn from these examples a real-valued ranking function that induces ranking via a convexity feature. We consider the problem of self-organising learning from numerical data to be represented by a well-fitted convex polygon procedure, in which the vertices correspond to descriptors representing domains of web pages. Results and statistical evaluation of procedure show that the proposed method may be characterised as accurate.},

abstract = {G3 Corfu Butterflies is a public benchmark for small-scale, long-tailed, multi-label attribute recognition. It is designed as a tight, reproducible test-bed for computer-vision methods that target data-efficient learning, multi-label classification with strong class imbalance, and compositional attribute transfer. The subject matter (butterfly photographs collected in Corfu, Greece, by Stamatis Ghinis, Vojsava Gjoni, and Spiros Gkinis) is the data substrate; the contribution is the benchmark layer built on top of it. Contents of v1.0: - 165 high-resolution JPEG images (~73 MB total); - image-level multi-label annotations across three attribute families (colour, pattern, additional visual features), tokenised into a 45-entry vocabulary in a fixed order; - canonical evaluation splits: a locked 15% holdout test set (28 images) and five iteratively-stratified cross-validation folds over the remaining 137 images, all at seed 42; - two reference baselines with fully documented hyper-parameters: a frozen CLIP ViT-B/32 linear probe and a fine-tuned ViT-B/16; - two precomputed image-embedding matrices aligned row-for-row with metadata.csv (CLIP ViT-B/32, 512-d L2-normalised; torchvision ViT-B/16 ImageNet1k, 768-d pooled CLS) for downstream retrieval / clustering / weak-supervision studies; and - a data-descriptor paper (main.pdf) with full reproduction instructions, a descriptive-statistics section, and a Colab/Kaggle quickstart notebook. Reference numbers on the shipped splits: - CLIP linear probe: 5-fold macro-F1 0.291 ± 0.046; holdout 0.256. - Fine-tuned ViT-B/16: 5-fold macro-F1 0.395 ± 0.040; holdout ensemble macro-F1 0.342, micro-F1 0.563, mAP 0.443. Evaluation-active labels: because the benchmark is deliberately long-tailed and the holdout is small, 24 of 45 labels have at least one positive example in the locked holdout. Macro-averaged metrics are reported over those 24 labels; the remaining labels contribute only to the micro-averaged counts. This is fully documented in Section 3 of the paper. Primary uses (computer-vision research): data-efficient learning on O(10^2)-image budgets; long-tail multi-label classification and loss-reweighting studies; representation comparison of frozen foundation features against full fine-tuning; label-correlation modelling on a corpus small enough to iterate on; and compositional transfer across attribute families. Not included in v1.0: species labels, region-level masks/bounding boxes, GPS coordinates, and per-image timestamps. These extensions are listed under Future Work in the accompanying paper. Dedication: the dataset is dedicated to the memory of Professor Markos Avlonitis, whose sustained contributions to the computational study of biodiversity in the Ionian Islands shaped both the scientific culture in which this work was carried out and the motivation to build open, reusable resources of this kind. Please cite the dataset when using it in academic or applied research, and contact the corresponding author for collaboration or feedback.},

abstract = {When searching for projects on online platforms, potential bidders (providers) have minimum search costs and therefore can bid for new projects quite easy and fast. To strengthen their profile, they typically complement their actual bid with a cover letter. This letter contains either a rather project-focused and bid-specific message or it is more general, trying to enhance the provider's profile more generally. In this paper, we study if and how the message complementing a provider's bid affects his chance to win a project via an online project platform. Based on data collected from the platform getacoder.com, we study more than 13,000 bids from over 900 projects. In brief, we find that bids with a project-focused message are more likely to be selected by a client. Referring to the importance of the communication strategy during the negotiation phase, we complement Gefen and Carmel (2008), who – using a similar approach – investigated mainly the impacts of location and reputation on winning projects offered online},

abstract = {The new social and technological framework of Web 2.0 has resulted in the availability of significant volumes of user generated content. In some cases, user generated content describes existing services, as in the case of travel reviews, in which the users express their experiences and opinions about hotels among other aspects of travel experience. Existing approaches to measuring hotel quality from the customer perspective usually follow the expectation-experience gap model of SERVQUAL or some form of incident analysis. However, user generated content can be used as a complement to automatically gather user opinions in which the aspects covered are those spontaneously raised by customers. This paper reports an initial exploration of such approach on a small sample or reviews in Spanish gathered from TripAdvisor, using existing classifications of emotion types and eliciting conditions. Shallow natural language processing (NLP) techniques are applied to automatically extract simple expressions that can be used to obtain a profile of hotel quality. The results of the preliminary study were able to identify emotion types and eliciting conditions with a reasonable effectiveness which points out to the potential of the techniques to become a complementary tool for hotel evaluation.},

Online social interactions are the major element of activity in online communities. Social network theory and in particular the strength of weak ties hypothesis can provide an analytical framework for studying them. We contribute by introducing a typology of social, behavioral and economic incentives by formulating related hypothesis. We then combine these hypothesis in a proposed structural model from which we theorize the different classes depending on the model configuration.},

abstract = {In the last decade the evolution on educational technologies forced an extraordinary interest in new methods for delivering learning content to learners. The role of technology has often been overestimated causing a myopic consideration of the critical issues in e-learning. This paper provides an initial discussion of the role of ontologies in the context of e-learning. The overall objective is to emphasize the importance of analysing a phenomenon and reveal the descriptive conceptualizations that affect the employment of technology. Ontology as a term has an intrinsic holistic character and from this point of view is quite interesting to investigate ways of understanding the phenomenon of e-learning from several perspectives. An initial clarification of term ontology is presented and the main issues are used for the description of the developmental process of the e-learning ontology entitled Mutli- Dimensional Dynamic Learning (MDL). The final conclusion balances conceptualizations and technological formulations by drilling down abstract concepts to data declarations and thus machine-readable semantics.},

abstract = {Current models of ranking in Information Retrieval (IR) are somewhat blind to the consideration of the social context that surrounds an information resource as a parameter that affects the precision of the ranking in the query results. On the other hand that social context is depicted upon the relational ties of the affiliated social entities (authors) thus is something that cannot be measured and quantified accurately by back-link and citation based models. In this thesis we adopt an imprecise modeling approach of the depicted relational ties using the paradigm of fuzzy sets as to express partial degrees of membership depicted on the concept of 'opinion' as an input to a model that considers both the informational (hyperlink) and social (relational) context of the information resources as to provide better ranking of the retrieved results with respect to both contexts. A formalization of the algorithm and a validation of the model using simulation is given as a proof of concept along with discussion of the obtained results.},

abstract = {This dissertation studies the behavioral characteristics of participants engaged in information exchange in the context of online communities. Online communities are defined as collectives of individuals that use computer mediated communication to facilitate interaction over a shared purpose and/or objective. It is argued that this interaction creates externalities, for example, in the form of codified information that others can use through web search tools. These externalities assemble a virtual form of social capital, a commonly shared resource. The research objective of this thesis is to examine how the behavioral tendencies of the participants in online communities are affected by the way this common resource is formatted, administered and shared. The dissertation consists of two parts: a theoretical part where the empirical background and the object of research inquiry is highlighted, and an empirical part which consists of four empirical studies carried out in the context of three online communities, namely, Google Answers, Yahoo!Answers and Amazon Online Reviews. The empirical part of this dissertation starts with a controlled experiment emulating a well known social dilemma: the public goods game. It provides substance as to whether and when participants in online communities behave (un) cooperatively. The next two studies focus on a special case of online communities where participants ask questions and other participants post answers conditionally on social and monetary incentives. The results of these two studies confirm that community participants do care about the contributions of others and engage in incentive compatible behavior. Yahoo!Answers participants exercise effort in the community by posting answers to questions conditionally on benefits provided by other participants. The empirical findings show that contributing participants in an online community receive answers faster, while those that do not contribute much effort are sanctioned in the form of longer response-time to their questions. In Google Answers this thesis, interactions can be observed that are based on monetary rewards (rather than social rewards in the form of a reputation index as in Yahoo Answers). Participants make use of voluntarily awarded payoffs (tips) along with stated rewards, in order to motivate those that provide answers (answerers) to provide better quality in their responses. The findings of this study confirm the symmetric effect between monetary rewards and quality. However, this study also identifies cases where social norms have a significant effect on response behavior. When participants seek to get better service with less effort (in terms of total cost), a reputation index which is constructed by the history of their previous interactions supports such an attempt. In other words, reputation history influences information sharing behavior in online communities. The last chapter of the empirical part focuses on another crucial aspect of information as a shared resource: Clarity and understandability. The study examines online product reviews on Amazon.com. The results suggest that participants do care about the clarity of this codified form of experience which increases a helpfulness index accordingly. The thesis overall finds symmetric effects between participation in online communities and output of interaction, but also identifies the ability of the participants to interact strategically as they seek to minimize the effort they provide in order to find the information they seek. The results underline the importance of signaling and quality evaluation mechanisms as counter-balancing control that can enhance activity on online communities.},

abstract = {An overwhelming stream of research suggests that online reviews impact firms' profits positively. In this study we show conditions where this may not hold true. In a vertical market, we identify strategies that a manufacturer can utilize to affect a retailer's attitude towards publicizing consumer reviews. We model a two-period multi-stage game where vertically integrated and separated firms co-exist and choose prices (of old and new products) and product quality (of new products) along with information strategies. We study the extreme situation where new products have no reviews available yet (i.e., only old products have reviews or the possibility of having reviews). Our main findings are that in a separated distribution channel, the manufacturer always benefits from the availability of online reviews, whereas the retailer only benefits if consumer valuation for a new product is sufficiently low. When competition is not too tough and consumer valuation for the new product is not too high, the manufacturer may opt for discounting the wholesale prices to prompt the retailer to post the online reviews. Furthermore, when consumer uncertainty for the new product is sufficiently low, the optimal strategy for the manufacturer is to limit the release of technical information.},
